Pauper Brewers Championship (October 2013)

Pauper Brewers Championship (October 2013)

Sep 27, 2013

Casting Commons would like to announce the Pauper Brewers Championship for October 2013. Starting after downtime on October 2nd, we will be on the lookout for any Pauper deckbuilders who want to prove their creations have what it takes to win in a Magic Online Daily Event and become the next big deck. From October 2nd – October 29th, players can submit their original Pauper deck list to castingcommons.com, using the submission processed described below. Any player with an approved submission that goes 3-1 or 4-0 in a Magic Online Pauper Daily Event in this time period will have their Magic Online Qualifer Points tracked independently on our Pauper Brewers Championship Leaderboard. The player with the most Qualifier Points at the end of the month playing their own rogue Pauper decks will be declared the winner and hold the title of Best Pauper Brewer for October 2013. Prizes will be awarded to the winner and players in 2nd and 3rd place depending on the available prize pool.

To submit a deck to the Brewers Championship follow the directions on this page. Then be sure to return to this page to check if your deck has been approved. Throughout the entirety of the season, be sure to monitor the Pauper Brewers Championship Decklists page to view the approved decks submitted by you and others. Be sure to also view the Pauper Brewers Championship Leaderboard to see how well they are performing in the Championship. (The Decklist and Leaderboard pages are also available using the menu at the top of the page.)

We have begun recording Daily Event results for the Leaderboard as of October 2nd. However, we are accepting submissions to the Championship throughout the entirety of the season. Once your deck has been approved we can start recording your results. A high quality submission in the second or third week of the Championship could easily win the competition. We encourage you to tune your deck throughout the competition and to document the changes.

FAQ:

What is the Pauper Brewers Championship?

The Pauper Brewers Championship is a month-long competition held by Casting Commons looking for players with the next big Pauper deck waiting to be unleashed at the competitive level.

How do I submit my deck list to the Pauper Brewers Championship?

Submitting a deck list to the Pauper Brewers Championship is very easy. All you have to do is:

  1. Create a free account on DeckStats.net using your Magic Online name as your username.
  2. Create and upload your deck list to DeckStats.net under your account. All decks must have a complete 60 card main deck and valid 0-15 card sideboard using only cards eligible for the Magic Online Pauper format. The deck name must start with “PBC S11” so it will be easier for us to find and reference in the future. Here is an example decklist.
  3. Leave a comment below including a link to the deck and your Magic Online username.
  4. We will reply to your comment within 24 hours to let you know if your deck has been approved for the Pauper Brewers Championship. If a deck is rejected we will provide a reason for the rejection in our response.

If your deck is approved for the Pauper Brewers Championship we will publish your decklist along with your Magic Online username among the approved decks here. (This page is also available using the menu at the top of the page.)

Can I submit more than one deck list to the Pauper Brewers Championship?

Players can submit as many different deck lists as they like to the Pauper Brewers Championship using the submission process for each individual deck. We will take each deck list into separate consideration. Just because a player has one approved deck for the championship does not mean that the rest of their decks will be automatically approved.

Magic Online Qualifer Points earned by playing multiple different approved deck lists will all be counted for the player.

Is there a timeline for submitting deck lists to the Pauper Brewers Championship?

Players can submit their deck lists at any time during the Pauper Brewers Championship from October 2nd – October 29th. We are aware it might take some players more time before they have a deck list they are comfortable entering a Magic Online Daily Event with.

The only thing that we require you to do is submit the deck list for approval before you start playing Magic Online Daily Events with it in order to ensure all your results count are accounted for.

Can I change my deck list after I have submitted it to the Pauper Brewers Championship?

Players are allowed to change their deck list after they have submitted it and it has received approval in the Pauper Brewers Championship. We expect players to do this as they learn more about their deck from playing Magic Online Daily Events. If you change your deck list we do ask you to keep a log of the changes if possible in the Discuss section of the deck list on DeckStats.net. We will also need to verify the final version of the deck list if you go 3-1 or 4-0 (see the next section).

How are results being recorded for the Pauper Brewers Championship?

We will be tracking all the Magic Online Pauper Daily Events from October 2nd – October 29th. Any player who earns at least 1 MOCS Qualifier Point with their approved deck list for the Pauper Brewers Championship will be entered into our database. This includes ALL the Pauper Daily Events, NOT just the ones that show up on Magic Online’s What’s Happening Page.

In order for us to track the results earned by the approved deck lists, players must notify either Jason (jsiri84) or Eric (E. Hustle) on Magic Online as soon as possible if they go 3-1 or 4-0 with their deck list after the event has been completed so we can verify the results by watching the replays. If neither one of us is online, leave us a message on Magic Online with Event ID of the event where you went 3-1 or 4-0 or a comment on this page including your Magic Online username and the Event ID.

We will also ask for a screenshot of the final version of the deck list you used in the event where you went 3-1 or 4-0 to verify it against the deck list you published on DeckStats.net.

How often are the results updated for the Pauper Brewers Championship?

Results will be updated daily and shown on our Leaderboard here. (This page is also available using the menu at the top of the page.) Our Leaderboard will be tracking the overall number of Magic Online Qualifier Points earned by each player with their approved deck lists as well as the qualifier points earned by each approved deck list submitted by a player.

What prizes are being awarded for the Pauper Brewers Championship?

We will be awarding prizes to the Top 3 players in the championship based on their final standing. Any ties between players in contention for a prize will be decided by who has more 4-0 finishes. In addition, we may also have a special awards based on community votes and input from the writing staff at Casting Commons in several different categories that will be decided at a later time. These categories will be specified by Week 3 of the Championship.

The prize pool is being funded entirely through player donations. Currently, the prize pool is being funded by writers for this site and players in Team DBC. We will update the prize structure on this page once we have finalized all of our player donations.

1st Place: 1 From the Vault: Twenty Online Sealed Set

2nd Place: 1 Commander Deck available in the Magic Online store (player’s choice)

3rd Place: 6 Magic 2014 digital boosters

In addition to the prizes awarded at the end of the challenge, players who go 4-0 without any splits in a Magic Online Pauper Daily Event with their deck list may also submit material for an article that will feature the deck in the New Brews section of Casting Commons. Any article meeting the guidelines (see next section) will receive an additional 3 Magic 2014 boosters upon submission to Casting Commons.

How can I submit an article about my winning deck in the Pauper Brewers Championship?

Going 4-0 without any splits in a Magic Online Daily Event with an original deck is no small feat and we want to hear all about it on Casting Commons. We encourage these successful brewers to submit an article to us so we can highlight their work on our website. Any article submissions must include the following (feel free to go beyond what we have listed here, but this is the bare minimum for us to publish a decent article and do justice to your accomplishment):

  • Tell us a little bit about yourself. People will be curious about you and want to know basic facts like your name, where you come from and how long you’ve been playing Magic.
  • Final deck list used in the Magic Online Daily Event where you went 4-0.
  • Tell us about your brewing process. You may include topics such as what inspired you to come up with this idea, key cards you wanted to build around and adjustments you made from your original list.
  • Tell us about the strengths and weaknesses of your deck list. You may include topics such as positive / negative match ups or specific cards which under / overperformed during your matches.
  • Full event report of the Magic Online Pauper Daily Event where you went 4-0. This can take many forms depending on what you prefer. We will accept any of the following as an event report:
    • Real-time video recording of you playing the deck during event. This recording will include live match commentary and sideboarding.
    • Post-event video recording of the event replays. You will be required to include a brief description of each round including any key points (i.e. crucial plays, interactions) and a sideboard guide.
    • Written report describing each round in full detail including key points and a sideboard guide.
    • Tell us about what you learned and what you would change in the future about your deck.

Any player who submits an article meeting these guidelines will receive an additional 3 Magic 2014 boosters.

When can I collect my prize for the Pauper Brewers Championship?

A writer for Casting Commons will contact you within one week after the championship ends on October 29th to award any prize you have won.

Can I donate to the Pauper Brewers Championship prize pool?

We will accept any donations to the Pauper Brewers Championship prize pool. Players who donate to the prize pool will be listed on this website along with their donation to recognize their contribution. Donations may include booster packs or tickets. We appreciate any help that we can get from the Pauper community to make this successful.

What are some reasons a deck can be rejected from the Pauper Brewers Championship?

Any submission can be rejected for one of the following reasons:

  • Currently established and well-known deck. Example: Stompy and Mono Blue Delver are not eligible for the championship.
  • Modification of a currently established and well-known deck. Example: Stompy and Mono Blue Delver with slightly modified main decks and sideboards are not eligible for the championship.
  • The same deck has been submitted by another player more than 24 hours in advance. We do allow for the fact that multiple players may come up with the same idea independently. We will be weighing each submission on a case by case basis when it comes to plagiarizing any ideas.
  • Clearly established previous ownership of the deck. If a player wants to submit a previous brew created by another player it has to be with significant modifications and new ideas. We will be weighing each submission on a case by case basis when it comes to plagiarizing any ideas. Example: We know that Eric Easton (E. Hustle) came up with the Rocky Horror deck and will reject anyone attempting to submit this as their own.

We want to emphasize that all decks will be considered on a case by case basis. We reserve the right to disqualify a submission at any point during the Pauper Brewers Championship even if it has been given prior approval. In these circumstances we will notify the player directly along with our reasons for deciding to reject their submission. Any Magic Online Qualifer Points earned with a disqualified deck list will be immediately invalidated for purposes of the championship.

    • Zerserdar,

Your Black Green list looks similar to a deck I have seen before, but I can’t quite remember where. Both of your decks have been approved and added to the Decklists page on 9/27. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

I’m happy to see you step up and participate in the event. It seems appropriate that you are playing a Blue White Caw Blade deck in a competition with multiple copies of Jace, the Mind Sculptor available as prizes. Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 9/29. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

Am I mistaken or have you not logged onto Magic Online since May 5th? I am happy to report that nearly every other competitor in the Pauper Brewers Championship has played in at least one Pauper Daily Event at this point.

I am happy to see your different and interesting take on a Tron deck. It does appear to be inspired by the less commonly played Modern Tron deck. (The Green Red list submitted obviously appears inspired by the more commonly played Modern Tron deck.) Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/1. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

This is a modified version of an Anti Blue Red Post deck developed for a format prior to the ban of Empty the Warrens and Grapeshot. I went 3-1 in a Daily Event in this enviroment.

The original decklist can be found here:
    http://www.wizards.com/magic/Digital/MagicOnlineTourn.aspx?x=mtg/digital/magiconline/tourn/4485623

I see someone has already submitted a Green Red Tron deck, albeit with a number of differences. Hopefully, mine can still be accepted since I have put many hours into tweaking the last slots. If not, then good luck to the other submission.

    • Eggsbenedict,

Historically you are the original designer and the first person to place with the deck. This makes you eligible for the Championship, even if someone has already submitted the idea. JustSin had mentioned that someone had placed with the deck in the past and I never did the research. It would be completely unfair to not allow you to participate.

I am going to allow both you and the other Red Green Tron Player, mr_ide, to compete in the competition due to the circumstances. He is actually one of only two players who have submitted decks that have not yet played in Daily Events. However, I am never going to remove someone else I approved (mr_ide) from the competition, simply due to these circumstances. That is unfair to him and discouraging to the nature of the Championship. I am generally following the rules stated by jsiri84 when he created the competition, which he wrote in the FAQ article.

Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/3 (and mr_ide’s deck is obviously remains approved). Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

      Eric

In my mind, the more people working on the development of decks the better. Due the the nature of the competition we want to generally restrict each deck to one person. I am in the process of creating a new clan on Magic Online called Casting Commons and I encourage all the participants and other readers who are not affiliated with a clan to join. Hopefully, clan members will be able to work together to discuss their decks and test and tune their builds further. Our Championship allows submissions all month long and encourages (documented) deck tuning and even the possibility of building new decks or switching decks.

    • Binkzy,

I am happy to hear that you are already finding success with your deck in Daily Events. All future placings will be recorded for the Leaderboard. Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/3. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

    • 13dcol,

Haven’t those Zombies suffered enough, being that they’re Zombies and all? Why must you insist on continuing to Torture them?

I recently approved a similar Zombie list by grapplingfarang. In your version you combine Zombies with Tortured Existence, something that has already been done but not in over two years. Since you submitted your version within 24 hours of his and since Theros including Gray Merchant of Aspodel released today, I will allow your deck in the competition. The goal of the Championship is to have people submit diverse original decks and therefore after your submission, we will not accept anymore Zombie decks.

Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/4. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

I’m just getting back into MTGO after a 1+ yr hiatus. Does anyone know of a clan or group that I could join or would be willing to add me so I could playtest this deck and others? Tournament practice just isn’t really showing me the gauntlet.

I’m happy to see you playing Pauper again and brewing. We all know what happened last time you built a deck. Obviously, it is unlikely Green Blue Urza Tron will require any cards to be banned, but seeing a solid successor to Green Post would be nice. Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/8. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

I updated my Suicide Black Deck here: http://deck.tk/3zER0gu3.

I took out a couple of the evasion critters for beefier creatures. I also replaced Vampire Lacerator because it just never seemed good enough against other creatures, which is a majority of the Pauper field. I took out a land because nothing costs over 2, and maindecked Undying Evil. So far in playtesting I like how Undying Evil works with the deck. The sideboard is not tweaked as well as I would like but is probably going to stay as is for now.

        • ltbarn02,

It is nice to see you continuing to attempt to improve your deck. Building a functional Suicide Black deck is not an easy task. Your deck has been updated on the Decklists page on 10/12. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

    • DGame,

Apparently, your decision to remove Phyrexian Rager from a Mono Black Control list makes it an unestablished archetype. Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/11. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

      Eric

  14. Well, sorry for submitting a list that is so similar to what every other mono black player is doing. I spent all week at work, thinking about this awesome approach and now I see it’s not so cool because so many people try this. Forget that list and when I brew something nice I will let you know.

I probably won’t be able to play the required dailies to win, but I’ve had several opponents ask for my list after playing me, so I thought I’d post it. There’s a lot going on with this deck when it isn’t playing a goldfish, mostly Green or Red decks. You really have to be mindful of what a play now means later, but my experience playing through massive hate with Vintage Manaless Dredge and Standard Dredgevine really put this deck in my wheelhouse and make it a blast to play.

    Thanks,

You know I am a big fan of Black Red graveyard based decks and therefore happy to post yours. We don’t ask people to play an excessive amount of Daily Events, but would like you to play at least one during the entirety of the season. Currently the person in first place after ten days only has three Qualifier Points. Your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/12. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship.

I checked out your decklist but unfortunately there weren’t any ninjas and it wasn’t very delicious. Regardless, your deck has been approved and added to the Decklists page on 10/15. Good luck in the Pauper Brewers Championship, I mean Tournament Practice Room.
